As summer approaches, I find myself thinking about how technology has changed the face of education. From kindergarten to college, students are given more opportunities to embrace technology, expand their learning skills, and reach the world more than ever before. While part of me longs for the good old days of resource less days, books and vacations, the sensible part for me is seeing the many benefits the technology has brought to the education market.
For one thing, technology has greatly expanded access to information. From books to podcasts, white papers to videos – there are great prices on almost any kind of information you may want to find online today. Do you have a question? Google will also have a response (or 10,000) in seconds.
The technology also increased opportunities for more formal learning through MOOCs, online training programs, college-level programs and more. Colleges and universities embrace the practice by adding other online courses to their curriculum. In addition, universities recognize the need and benefit of liaison with both institutions in the US and abroad. “Institutions of higher learning are no longer the ivory towers,” said Stephanie Kim, Faculty Director of Master’s Programs in Global Higher Education and Higher Education Administration at Georgetown University. “They are very connected and meet with the communities they live in, here in the United States and around the world.”
Technology has opened the way for many to learn. Online courses and programs enable students to access their home, train, bus or train lessons. With the right tool and internet access, you can quickly connect to the world of learning. This has also made it easier for non-traditional students to return to school, as technology allows them to easily read in their programs.
Technology has connected people all over the world. Students have access to peers from all over the world. Google documents and other programs allow students to collaborate on projects; and invite new channels of communication. Students can share ideas and connect with others through programs set up and provided to their schools, as well as social media channels such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
Thanks to technology, teachers can easily customize the lessons, instructions, and projects of each child. Tracking student progress and identifying issues is easy with the right technology and in the classroom. Teachers of all ages and grades are working to incorporate technology into their classrooms to increase student engagement and improve learning opportunities provided to students. For those teaching high school and college students, Purdue recently suggested that a teacher’s role could shift to “much of a ‘side-by-side’ guide as students take on the greater responsibility of their education is using technology to gather relevant information.”
Technology has expanded access to higher education in rural areas. In How to Ensure Rural Students Benefit from Learning, the author states, “Rural areas are often as difficult to achieve as they are in densely populated regions. AP). Perhaps because of these limited courses, rural students are also less likely to have college and urban counterparts go to college after they graduate from high school. ” easily with online resources and courses with others from all over the country and abroad.
And those books I remember well? Online media, e-books, and online reading programs are beginning to make the book “extinct” in some places, or at least “an endangered species.” Apart from this, my hope is that we all continue to take the visible book and remember its weight in your hands; open the cover and feel a sense of excitement, potential, and the promise of learning something new.
Technology will continue to change the state of education, allowing people from all over the world to connect, collaborate and learn from each other.
