The Dallas Cowboys is an American professional football team traditionally based in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The Cowboys play in the National Football League’s Eastern Division, currently facing the undefeated New Orleans Saints. The Cowboys have been a perennial contender in this divisional playoff game, which has a special meaning to the city and the state. The state is synonymous with great football, and the city is synonymous with one of the best running teams in the National Football League. In recent decades the Cowboys have seen several come from the blue and make it to the Super Bowl, where they meet the widely acclaimed Dallas Cowboys.
Since Romo has been the main focal point of the offense, the Cowboys often use a fairly simple offensive scheme. They rely on a good running game, a great defense, and a great red-zone scheme to put points on the board early and often. When you look back and see that they won just three games this year against the top defenses in the NFL, it is clear they need a lot of work. This doesn’t necessarily mean they are bad football teams, but it does indicate this is a scheme that needs some fine tuning.
Two things are frequently overlooked when evaluating NFL offense. Those two aspects are the scheme and the offensive line. Outside of the obvious issues with Romo and the offensive line, there were some troubling games for the Dallas Cowboys last season by the rushing attack. Without a strong running game and no great red-zone scheme, this could be a very high ceiling team for the year.

Cornerbacks dropped several passes, including some by standout defensive player DeMarcus Ware. Cornerbacks coach Jim Hasselbain is expecting to get this group more aware of their assignments and more physical at practices this summer. Cornerbacks are perhaps the greatest area of need for the Cowboys this year, and it appears they plan to address this in order to improve their secondary. They also hope to strengthen the unit with a few draft picks and by adding some more talent at various positions.
Linebackers were another area of major concern for the Dallas Cowboys this year. Although injuries to tackle Laglas Hurst and possibly rookies Tyron Johnson and DeVonta Smith opened some holes on the offensive line, the overall group still didn’t prove itself to be as strong as it has been in previous seasons. Cornerbacks coach Jim Hasselbain did not seem willing to use first-round draft pick DeMarcus Ware on the practice field, even though he claimed Ware is “ahead of schedule” in spring workouts. Cornerbacks are one of the most important positions for the Dallas Cowboys, and they do not appear to be addressing this area in any big way.
The secondary is not the only place the Dallas Cowboys could use some help on offense. They need to bring in a new starting quarterback as well if they hope to make some changes to their offense after last week’s loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. With veteran Tony Romo out of the picture, the Cowboys will turn to No. 7 overall draft pick Jason Witten, but they will not have the same type of depth at the position that they had last season when Romo was healthy. The Eagles hit a couple of key safeties with free agency acquisitions, signing free agent starters Bradley colts and Thomas Morstead, as well as backup quarterback Mark Sanchez. It looks as if the Cowboys may suffer just as much if not more if Romo cannot play again this season.
On the defensive side of the football, the Dallas Cowboys has one of the best schemes in pro football. Their scheme has allowed them to rank in the top 10 in points allowed each season since 2021, and their defensive units has held its own against some of the best offenses in football. This year’s unit lost some of its depth with the retirements of standout defensive ends DeMarcus Ware and Barry Church, but it still has two very quality corners in the team’s three starting defensive ends, as well as one solid middle linebacker and one powerful nose tackle. The secondary is deep with the likes of Stephen Terrell, James Henderson and Anthony Jefferson, and they do have one standout player in the back.
All of this makes for an interesting off season for Dallas Cowboys fans to follow. The salary cap is set to be huge this year, so finding a top tier CB like Deion Riddick would seem to be a pretty high priority for the club. If they can get someone like Julius Peppers or Datone Jones in-line to take over at strong tackle, then the Cowboys could have one of the most formidable fronts in football. The offensive line has been improved, while the defensive line has held its own. Now the only real thing left to address is whether Tony Romo can stay healthy this time.
