Framing photography involves using a variety of elements in your photos to establish a composition. With that in mind, there are a few simple guidelines to follow when framing your images. The purpose of these techniques is not to add or detract from the main subject of your photo. Rather, they are intended to add interest and clarity to the image by giving focus to other, less important elements of the picture.
In framing photography, there are two ways you can go about it. First, you can simply position the camera so that the focal point of your image faces directly toward you. Then you can place other elements such as the background or elements behind the main subject of the photo in such a way that they are out of reach, so they do not distract the viewer from your main subject. However, if you choose to use these techniques, you should be very careful to keep your audience in mind. You want to be sure your framing and composition will be appealing to your viewer.
When framing photography, you should always try to make the focal point of your image the center of attention. Even though you may have many other elements that are near or slightly in the foreground, such as the surrounding trees or buildings, your main subject should be the one the viewer will notice and focus on. In general, you want to have three frames or stages in which to display your image. These stages should be equally sized, equally placed above the ground, and filled with equally sized objects.
The first stage in framing photography is to determine which elements are the most important to the photograph. It may be the sky, the background, or any other element of the photograph. You can then size each element according to its importance. A big city in the background might look nice with little trees covering most of it, but if the city is small, you may want to leave some trees empty or turn them away to save on space. A sea full of blue water might not seem like a good subject for a photograph, but a calm and tranquil beach with calm and lovely beaches scattered throughout it would be beautiful.
The second stage in framing is to establish the leading lines in your composition. These are the central elements of your frame. Depending on the subject, you may be able to use white or black frames, or you might want to use color frames. It all comes down to personal choice, and even though black and white photos tend to look more formal and put less emphasis on composition techniques, white frames can look more playful and dynamic.
Framing photography using multiple frames is also a great way to bring life to your photographs. Multiple frames can make a single image really stand out, creating a sense of depth and fullness. This is especially effective when you are taking photographs of actual natural elements, such as landscapes or beaches. Using multiple digital frames can give the impression that there is more going on than there actually is since the audience will be able to see the entire scene in much more detail than they could if the photo were shown as a single image.
Framing with shadows is an advanced technique that I advise you to learn. If you have the opportunity, I recommend you experiment with different types of framing with the sun at your back. This creates an optical illusion where the sun appears to be behind the subject, which can really make for a striking photograph. However, using this method too much can cause a flat appearance, and overdoing it can make a photograph look like it was taken in an improper lighting situation. In general, when it comes to framing with shadows, you will want to keep the distance between the sun and your subject fairly narrow, preferably only a few inches wide.
Framing photography isn’t as hard as some might think. In fact, framing your photo with the right composition techniques can make all the difference in the world. Just be sure to start off with a plan, and don’t let your creativity go overboard. Keep things simple, keep your exposure constant, and keep the framing basic. With these tips in mind, I believe you will be able to capture your favorite natural elements in amazing photos.
