We live in a growing world. While the population in the United States may be growing at a slower rate than it has historically, between immigration and natural growth, our cities and towns are changing. Those changes mean that many cities are having to boost the amount of available housing and create new streets and roads for their new residents to drive on.
Since change is inevitable, it’s important to know how to remove a street sign to make room for the new! Read on to learn about the various types of street signs and how to remove them!
Wooden Street Signs
Wooden street signs are the easiest to deal with because they’re made out of the weakest material. All you need is a couple of 4x4s, a piece of scrap lumber, and a fulcrum and lever. Attach the scrap lumber onto the wooden post, leaving about four inches of space above the top of the soil.
Weaken the soil around the post by breaking it up and getting it wet. Then, set your lever on top of the 4x4s and push up against the piece of scrap lumber. Repeat until the post is out of the ground!
Street Signs on Metal Posts
If you’re dealing with a street sign that’s attached to a small metal post, then you’re going to want to grab a stake puller. Stake pullers make quick work of stop signs, road signs, and the like.
Most stake pullers come with a set of instructions that you need to follow in order to construct and use the tool safely. Once constructed, all you need to do is put the stake puller on the ground near the post, place the jaws on either side of the U picket, place your foot on the base of the puller, and push down on the handle.
Repeat the pulling motion until the sign is out of the ground.
Unbolting a Street Sign
Not interesting in removing a street sign in its entirety? If you want to leave the post up and change out the sign, then all you need to do is unbolt the sign.
Grab a wrench and use it to unthread the nut and bolt from the sign. Then, use a drill to drill the rivet head and remove the cap. Always work from the bottom to the top, especially when working with large metal signs.
Learning How to Remove a Street Sign Is Half the Battle!
There are so many different types of street signs out there, so learning how to remove a street sign might seem quite complicated. Once you know the type of material you’re working with, however, you’ll be able to gather your tools and make quick work of it.
