Tips for Pokémon Go
When I heard news that Pokémon Go will finally be out for mobile users in Europe and Asia last week, I promised myself that I wouldn’t be sucked into the madness, despite my twenty year love for the universe. andoverleader
but, thanks to articles incessantly posted on my newsfeed and my friends all downloading it and subsequently posting in on their SnapChats and whatnots (#FirstWorldMillenialProblems), I decided to finally check it out. And checked it out I did.
It’s actually really refreshing playing a game where you have to be physically outside your house in order to advance in, something that other consoles whose imperatives to make me more active never succeeded in doing. The farther you are the more Pokémon you can catch, the more you catch the higher the level you get and the higher level you get the more variety of species you’ll be able to encounter, simple.
The kind of Pokémon I used to collect before iOS.
For those who enjoy exploring the world around them or those who know their area quite well, this game will highly appeal to you. You can catch random Pokémon whilst out with your friends, while commuting to work or when you’re waiting for your plane to board (hyperlink to Lachlan video link), just remember not to be late to wherever you’re going!
So for those who’d just downloaded the app onto their phone, here are some tips to fully enjoy yourself whilst keeping yourself safe.
Hold on to the PokéBall
While catching Pokémon in this game is considerably easier than in consoles, the throwing of the actual ball can be slippery. Unlike the games, you have to physically throw the ball to the monster with your fingers, which could mean a miss. Try to hold the ball like a baseball player and do a circling motion with it until it sparkles before throwing it to the Pokémon, which could increase your experience points especially if you catch it straight after one go
It’s also good to understand the colours that encircle a Pokémon during the catching stage, which help the Trainer recognise whether they’re easy to catch. Having a green circle around the monster means it’ll be caught most likely with just one ball thrown at it. Yellow means some difficulty and red is the hardest, which might require you to use berries and stronger PokéBalls like the Great Ball to have a higher chance of catching them
Grass
Whenever you’re near a park or a grassy area and you see some grass rustling around, it’s more than likely a Pokémon creeping around. Coming near the patch of grass and waiting there can result in something catchable coming out!
Catch as much as you can
Not only should you catch as many species as you can, but you should aim to catch as many of the same Pokémon species as you can, as you can “transfer” them or swap them for candy, which you can use to evolve your Pokémon!
Don’t Pokémon and Drive
While this may be obvious, remember to always to focus on the road and not on your phone when you’re manoeuvring a car. There have been many incidences already reported where players have fallen down cliffs, severely injured themselves and have developed sunburns, so always be vigilant and prioritise yourself when out there catching them all! Do everyone and yourself a favour and keep both eyes on the road; you can always catch that Tauros later on anyway.
Pokémon Lure Modules
Other than being generally aware and cautious about your surroundings when out playing the game, it is also worth noting the importance about being extra cautious towards Lure Modules.
There have been talks of people experiencing negative things from following Lure Modules, which are basically PokéStops that have been sprinkled with Incense that will attract Pokémon for thirty minutes for all Trainers who are there. This is shown on the app as a PokéStop having pink petals circling around it.
While this is considered a good thing, there are some who have exploited the situation to commit theft, pedophilia and other heinous crimes to unknowing players, so always be vigilant about where these Stops are, what time you’ll be going there and who you’re going there with. Remember that your personal safety is always most important.
Happy hunting!
