Are you looking to get that shiny, Hollywood smile? Many people go straight for the whiteners when trying to perfect the look. However, the correct dental hygiene can give you this fashionable appearance without the cost.
For health or aesthetics, you need to look after your teeth. Read on for our need-to-know dental health tips.
Rinse Before Brushing
For most people, brushing your teeth is followed by a rinse. However, this can remove the important additives, such as fluoride, that are in the toothpaste. This helps strengthen the teeth, so it is best to leave it there.
Rinsing your mouth beforehand is much more effective. It can help remove food stuck in gaps, that your brush may struggle to remove alone. If you must rinse at the end, use a delicate mouthwash that contains fluoride.
Brush the Tongue
As well as brushing your teeth to promote good dental health, you should also brush the tongue. The film of bacteria, known as plaque, can inhabit the surface of the tongue as well as the teeth. It often looks like a white layer on the muscle itself.
Start by gently rubbing your tongue with your toothbrush. Some toothbrushes even have a ridged surface for this on the back of the head. Do not push too hard, or it may cause your gag reflex to kick in.
Floss
If you want healthy teeth, then flossing needs to be part of your care routine. Unfortunately, even people who do floss often miss parts. You can cover a bigger area by changing your flossing technique.
When the floss is between your teeth, make sure you floss in both directions. This hits both edges of adjacent teeth. Many people only floss in one direction, meaning huge parts of their teeth are left untreated.
Know When to See a Dentist
Ideally, you should visit a dentist every six months for a regular check-up. They will advise if you need any work and give your teeth a scale and polish. All of this prevents problems from occurring unexpectedly and promotes good dental health.
You should also aim to visit the best dentist possible. Get recommendations from the internet, or speak with friends in the local area.
Brush Twice a Day
Brushing twice a day is the optimum amount if you are seeking a healthy smile. Ideally, it should be done at the start and the end of the day, to wash away bacteria when it has had the most time to proliferate. Prolonged brushing more than twice a day can lead to damage to the enamel of the teeth, particularly if brushing is overly vigorous.
